## Actual Poker Mathematics: Poker Odds Computations

The basic principle is always compare the chances of making our hand with the chances of winning the opt. To formulate the principle we have: Unknown cards minus poker outs equal total poker outs. And then compare this with the pot size and the current wager amount. We can better understand this poker mathematics with an example.

For instance, we have a total of 12 poker outs (the number of cards we need to make our hand) with 47 unknown cards (cards still in the deck which we have not seen). We read this as 35:12 with the odds against us, or 3:1 we lose. There's slim chance of hitting our card.

So, 3:1 against us means we are apt to lose our hand 3 times as against only once we'd make or complete it and win. That's the same as a ¼ or 25 percent odds against us. Let's continue. If the pot has been built up to a hefty \$50 and the present or current wager amount is \$10. The pot odds then are \$50:\$10, or 5 is to 1 or 5:1. From the data above, this means that, summarizing, we have 12 poker outs, 47 unknown cards, a \$10 current wager amount, and a pot size of \$50. The poker mathematics (47 minus 12) is that a total of 35 cards won't help us with a hand odd of 35:12.

For our pot odds poker mathematics we have a 50:10 ratio using the current pot size and without adding our \$10 to the first number. In summary we have 35:12 that is about 3:1 and 50:10 which means 5:1. We compare the two ratio figures and then from them conclude whether to call a \$10 in the game or not.
